have his very first “Shut-Out”.

Epic!

Jake takes issue with “epic” but it was to me.

To say we’re pretty proud of him is an understatement.  And this isn’t necessarily about getting a shut-out, but because the boy stuck to something most kids his age wouldn’t ever have attempted.  Especially given the fact that three short years ago, he didn’t even know how to skate or had ever played this crazy fast game called hockey.

We took turns reciting on a regular basis…”What you’re doing is not easy” and “How bad do you want it?”

He preserved when it wasn’t easy, when he wanted to give up, when game after game he felt “less than” even though his parents were so proud of him for even trying in the first place.  And then, last Thursday night, he was rewarded by getting his first ever shut-out.  No pucks got past him.  Not once and yah, he played the whole entire game.  In Combined Driving terms:  A double-clean run!

That’s what you get for digging deep and following your dreams boy… Sometimes you get that one awesome game that makes up for all those times you felt like you were getting your clock cleaned!

Well done Son – Here’s to many more down the road.

The following shots are the seconds running down in the last period of play and then the celebration that followed.

Assistant Coach Todd tells me that he heard the boys arguing who was gonna get to Jake first to “take him out” in celebratory fashion – They all knew what a big deal it was to Jake (or for any goalie).  You’ll notice that number 2 won the race and got to him first. ;)

  1. JAKE THE WHOLE FAMILY COULD NOT BE PROUDER OF YOU. IT HAD TO BE SO EXCITING FOR MOM AND DAD ALSO. JUST WISH WE COULD HAVE SEEN IT, BUT WITH MOM’S GREAT TALENT FOR TAKING PICTURES AND WRITING STORIES WE COULD ALL FEEL THE EXCITEMENT FOR YOU AND YOUR PARNETS . IT TOOK YOUR DETERMINATION AND MOM AND DADS COMMITMENT TO HELPING YOU ACHIEVE THAT GOAL. TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. HOPE THAT YOU WILL HAVE MANY MORE OF THESE. WE KNOW YOU ALSO HAD 33 SHOTS THAT YOU STOPPED, SO IT WAS NO EASY GAME.

  2. AW….- I know nothing at all about hockey, but can tell that this is a HUGE deal! So, congrats to Jake: well deserved after all your hard work!
And congrats to you, Mom (and Dad), for raising such a wonderful young man!

  3. Way cool! Good for Jake – not an easily achieved “first” for sure as a goalie in a very tough game. How proud you must be of him and I hope he’s equally proud of HIMSELF….for playing the game, learning his “craft” as a goalie AND member of a team. Kids learn so much about themselves and life by participating in team sports. I know you’re super proud of him – and give a little bit of credit to yourselves for being supportive parents…..Sounds like a big family celebration needs to be had!!

    1. What you say about participating in team sports was told to me by my husband. You see, I never played – lived too far out of town, too many animals and chores. So you can imagine my excitement when my motor loving, truck and tractor crazy child finally wanted to play a team sport (albeit, Hockey). It’s been a great experience for him and a sport that I hope he always wants to play even if just for recreation.
“Family celebration”…I know! Just need to find ten minutes that we’re all together…and NOT at practice or a game! :)
      Go Sam!

  4. Jake, your extended family is so very proud of you for following your heart’s desire. This game of hockey is not an easy game to get into when your teammates have been playing it for several years before you have put your skates on for the first time. You are an awesome young man! Your mom and dad are also awesome raising you to be one terrific person! So very proud of you for going after your dreams! Never stop!
