A week ago tonight at Districts in Mackinaw City, Michigan….these pads, stick…
and this helmet…
helped this goalie…
have his very first “Shut-Out”.
Jake takes issue with “epic” but it was to me.
To say we’re pretty proud of him is an understatement. And this isn’t necessarily about getting a shut-out, but because the boy stuck to something most kids his age wouldn’t ever have attempted. Especially given the fact that three short years ago, he didn’t even know how to skate or had ever played this crazy fast game called hockey.
We took turns reciting on a regular basis…”What you’re doing is not easy” and “How bad do you want it?”
He preserved when it wasn’t easy, when he wanted to give up, when game after game he felt “less than” even though his parents were so proud of him for even trying in the first place. And then, last Thursday night, he was rewarded by getting his first ever shut-out. No pucks got past him. Not once and yah, he played the whole entire game. In Combined Driving terms: A double-clean run!
That’s what you get for digging deep and following your dreams boy… Sometimes you get that one awesome game that makes up for all those times you felt like you were getting your clock cleaned!
Well done Son – Here’s to many more down the road.
The following shots are the seconds running down in the last period of play and then the celebration that followed.
Assistant Coach Todd tells me that he heard the boys arguing who was gonna get to Jake first to “take him out” in celebratory fashion – They all knew what a big deal it was to Jake (or for any goalie). You’ll notice that number 2 won the race and got to him first. ;)
Comin’ at him…
and just like the effect of a bowling ball crashing a bowling pin…
down he went!
*Goalie mom so excited for goalie she couldn’t focus to save her life – you get the idea though.
